Concrete Storm Drain Construction

Concrete storm drain construction is a specialty field that necessitates learning specific skill sets. This type of work involves the understanding and reading of civil plans, and then installing these underground pipeline systems that eliminate storm water runoff.

Concrete storm drain construction offers a variety of job opportunities ranging from administrative duties to field work. Although many positions require a college degree, there are jobs for high school graduates as well.

Design engineers require substantially more education than laborers. However, nearly all positions require training in state and federal guidelines, along with EPA regulations of the Clean Water Act.

There are many steps involved with developing storm drain structures. From creating blueprints to excavation and trench digging to placement of water pipes, inlets, and concrete catch basins, the process must be orchestrated so everything works in harmony.

The role of drainage systems is to circumvent flooding. Storm water is conveyed to catch basins by gravitational pull. Once it enters curb opening inlets it is carried through a series of subsurface water pipes and discharged into bodies of water via an outlet pipe.

Drainage systems make use of a minor and major system to maximize control of water volume. For the most part, minor systems carry out the bulk of work. They are comprised of concrete or plastic HDPE or PVC pipes, inlets, swales, and storm drains that push water to the point of release. Major systems are utilized when minor systems cannot keep up with the volume of water entering the drainage structure.

Storm drain installation entails preparing the site by clearing landscaping and debris; grading the land; and preparing trenches for underground pipes or possibly even storm water storage tanks, as was the case at a local university.

In rural areas and locations that are not in close proximity to discharge locations, contractors may be required to install retention ponds. As the name implies, these ponds "retain" water instead of immediate release through outlet pipes.

While storm drainage systems are vital for public safety they are a major contributor to water pollution. Although systems are regulated and monitored by the EPA, a tremendous amount of contaminants are released into waterways daily.

Advanced technology has provided oil separator filtration devices to lessen the levels of synthetic motor oils from being released into oceans and rivers. However, due to the nature of design it is impractical to place filtration systems in curb opening inlets or catch basins because filters would disrupt water flow.

For this reason, drainage structures require ongoing maintenance and cleanouts to minimize the level of pollutants released into the environment. These levels are governed under the EPA's Clean Water Act.

Concrete storm drain builders must abide by water management protocol throughout the installation process. Contractors that work on municipal or private storm water construction projects must obtain permits associated with the National Pollutant Discharge System Program.

Because of the sensitive nature of concrete drainage structures it is imperative for construction workers to obtain adequate training and certification. Always hire reputable companies that possess experience in the type of drainage system installed.
