Pipeline Construction

Pipeline construction is an integral process that involves pre-construction planning, the actual construction phase, and post-construction. Each phase requires a dedicated team of highly trained employees including engineers, construction workers, general contractors, and project managers.

The planning phase of pipeline construction involves working with engineers to design the system. Multiple decisions must be made to ensure the project will not have negative impacts on the environment or community. The pipeline project planning team will need to acquire permits, secure easement rights, meet local, state, and federal requirements, and obtain project proposals from various pipeline construction companies.

The pipeline construction phase involves: clearing, grading, and trenching the site; stringing and welding pipeline segments together; placing the pipeline into trenches; backfilling the land and testing installed pipelines.

Oftentimes, subsurface utility engineering (SUE) is utilized to detect the presence and position of existing utilities. This SUE technology has proven to be instrumental in reducing project costs. SUE provides vacuum utility potholing and private utility locating functions in advance of any trenching or digging operations. This helps ensure underground conditions are ready for safe pipeline installations, minimizing or eliminating any utility conflicts altogether.

Land needs to be cleared and graded to create a construction right-of-way for the trenching process. Pipe segments are trucked to the construction site. Workers lay out the pipes, dig the trenches, install the pipe and lastly provide backfill and compacting operations to complete the pipeline installation.

Before pipes are installed they undergo rigorous testing by their respective pipe manufacturing firms to ensure pipeline integrity. Pipes are inspected according to various codes to ensure protection against leaks and other quality-driven criteria.

Lowering pipeline into trenches is one of the most difficult aspects of the job and requires skilled precision by operators. Required testing depends on the application used. Natural gas pipelines undergo different testing than sewer pipelines or fireline.

Post-construction involves reconstructing the land by backfilling and compacting the soil, to a certain compaction ratio, and then returning the land to its natural state. In this natural state, the raw land is now ready for a foundation such as a parking lot or bioswale, or building pad for a new building structure.

Pipeline projects are constantly inspected throughout the construction process. Inspectors make certain contractors have required permits and legal documents such as landowner and easement agreements, as well as to ensure proper protocol is followed regarding construction safety.

The construction site is monitored after project completion to ensure drainage and irrigation systems are working properly and to identify potential problems.

Installing pipeline requires coordinating work efforts with multiple pipeline contractors. Municipal and industrial construction projects can require hundreds of workers to complete the job.

It's vital to work with pipeline contractors experienced with the specific type of project requirement and capable of coordinating work efforts with multiple teams. Pipeline construction projects are categorized as dry utility or wet utility. While some contractors offer a combination, most specialize in one field or the other.

One important consideration of pipeline construction is obtaining the necessary type of pipeline material and appurtenances to complete the project. The recent disaster in Japan has led to an industry shortage of products required to manufacture pipeline. Rising prices in fuel, crude oil, and derivatives needed to manufacture HDPE resin has led to substantial increases in pipeline pricing.
